About Michael

My appreciation for furniture began at a young age. My parents were antique dealers, and my father, Jack, restored Early American Shaker and period furniture. Through him, I learned about proportion, traditional joinery, and furniture styles, developing skills that would later shape my career.

My career as a furniture maker and designer began after graduatig from the University of Vermont with a degree in Art History and Studio Art. While I was in college, I started a business with my parents Jack and Linda, and my older sister Meghan. Together, we created McGuire Family Furniture Makers and Vermont Clock Co. Our work was focused on Shaker reproductions and clocks inspired by New England grandfather clock. We developed wholesale accounts with retailers specializing in American reproduction furniture and exported our Shaker furniture collection to Germany.

Jack, my life long best friend, passed away in 2020 after a long battle with cancer. Today, I continue building furniture from the McGuire Family Collection while also creating custom pieces in a range of styles, including modern designs. Some of the furniture we built together as a family in the early 1990s is now selling at auction for more than its original retail price. My mother, Linda, resides in Tennessee and is retired from the furniture business.

I still use traditional. time-tested joinery methods, including mortise-and-tenon constrcution, dovetailed drawers, and other details that are often overlooked in today’s fast-paced world. Fortunately, there are still people who appreciate handcraftedsolid wood furniture, wether it is Shaker, modern, or another style. Shaker Furniture

After spending most of my life in vermont, I moved to Tennessee in 2019. My parents had purchased property there in 2012, which gave me the opportunity to visit often. I appreciate rural living, rolling hills, and the beauty of Tennessee’s countryside. In 2021. I built a new workshop and a home, and I’m proud to call it my Tennessee homestead.
